Karatsu is a city located in Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. Its name, formed from the Japanese word roots 唐 kara (China, or continental East Asia in general), and 津 tsu (port), signifies its historical importance as an ancient trading port between Japan with China and Korea. As of 1 September 2026, the city had an estimated population of 111,413 in 51,678 households, and a population density of 228.5 persons per km2. The total area of the city is 487.58 km2 (188.26 sq mi). The same Chinese characters are used in the name of the city as for the city of Dangjin in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea.
